Spring Concert – Crucifixion by John Stainer
With a selection of choral music for the season of Lent
The Avebury Vocal Ensemble will be performing in the lovely ancient church of St Mary, Fairford at 7pm on Saturday 22nd March.
The centrepiece of the programme will be John Stainer’s Passiontide cantata The Crucifixion. This Victorian gem contains some wonderfully memorable melodies and pairs them thoughtfully with the text. It has been a favourite with both choirs and audiences since its composition in 1887 and holds a special place in the hearts of amateur musicians who are grateful for the smooth and unshowy progression of the narrative and general accessibility.
Our programme is rounded out with some shorter motets and part songs including some by Stainer’s near contemporaries Parry and Elgar.
The Avebury Vocal Ensemble was formed in 2000. We perform mostly in north Wiltshire and south Gloucestershire.
