A Healing Service
Sunday, 17th October

On October 18th the Christian Church remembers St Luke who was a doctor. He also wrote two books of the Bible; a Gospel and The Acts of the Apostles together they make up just over one-quarter of the New Testament.

The Fairford Team Ministry invites you to A Healing Service on Sunday, 17th October to celebrate St Luke’s Day at St Mary’s Church, Fairford at 6.00pm. Please do join us.

Your Church Needs You!

Do you enjoy welcoming and chatting to visitors?

St Mary's needs additional Stewards to replace a number of long-serving Stewards who are retiring.  The duties are to provide a warm welcome to our church and general information, advice, leaflets, etc.

Even one hour once a week would be wonderful, or join the Relief Stewards'list to provide occasional cover.

Further information from Jo Williams, Co-ordinator of Stewards, 01285 713341.

Items discussed at the Meeting on 8th September

A very short meeting this month as a number of members of the PCC were away on holiday.

Church Calendar - The production of a St Mary’s Church calendar for 2011, to include photographs of the flower festival, windows and other events, is being considered to sell as a fund-raising item – decision to be made in October.

Local Ministry Team – An interesting report presented about visiting on behalf of the church which is undertaken in the Parish – agreed it should be more widely publicised.

Church Development – The ancillary furniture to match the altar is due for delivery next week. Initially there will be just a sample of the gilding and a decision will be made by the end of September about the final form.

Church Porch – To investigate the purchase of a different type of door mat which would be easier to keep clean and the possibility of steam cleaning the slabs and in-filling gaps.

Agreed that Summary of items discussed at PCC meetings would in future be published on the Church website as well as in the Parish News.

Charity of the Month:
Helen and Douglas House

The charity for October is Helen and Douglas House, the registered charity providing respite and end of life care for children and young adults with life shortening conditions as well as support and friendship for the whole family. The two hospice houses are bright, vibrant and positive places, where the emphasis is on living life to the full, even when life may be short.

Tim Hill, Chief Executive of both house writes: “…..Whilst in 1980, Sister Frances Dominica envisaged how life could be greatly improved for families coping with the knowledge that their child has a life-shortening condition, her vision could never have become a reality without the community’s prayers, practical support and financial gifts. From the acorn that was Helen House there are now over forty children’s hospices around the UK, as well as in countries around the world. All of this, I believe, an example of what’s possible when individual commits to bringing forth all that God placed within her or him. St Matthew reminds us that Jesus frequently presents himself in the form of another person’s pain or unmet need. As a congregation of God’s people I thank you for recognising HIM in the lives of the children and young people who use Helen or Douglas House.”

There is literature and a booklet of fund raising events on the top of the shelf along the south wall and Gift Aid envelopes on the small table to use if you can. Please support that worthy and very local cause. For more information write to Helen & Douglas House 14a Magdalen Road OXFORD OX4 1RW. Tel: 01865 794749. E-mail fundraising@helenandouglas.org.uk.
