St Mary's, Fairford Angel in Window 1

27th May, The Feast of Pentecost

A Celebration of Baptism and Confirmation at 3pm. This is a Deanery Service (and that is the new, larger Cirencester Deanery comprising the old Fairford and Cirencester Deaneries) and will be led by The Rt Rev’d John Went, Bishop of Tewkesbury. It promises to be a splendid occasion: an opportunity to celebrate our life together in Christ, renew our Baptismal Vows, and much, much more besides.

Service of Thanksgiving celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen

Sunday 3 June, 11am (No 10am service). For 60 years the Queen has served the country and Commonwealth with an unswerving sense of duty and faithfulness, always sustained by her Christian faith. We are all aware of the joys and sorrows of the Royal Family, as all families, have been through over the years. Similarly, the life of this nation has had it’s high points and low points during her reign. Through it all she has been a constant, a rock, giving family and nation a sense of unity and purpose that no one else could provide. We have much to celebrate.

Charity of the Month:
The Prayer Book Society (PBS)

The Prayer Book Society (PBS) The Book of Common Prayer is central is central to the Christian faith as practised by the Church of England. Originally compiled in the sixteenth century by Thomas Cranmer and modified in 1662, the Prayer Book remains the official doctrinal standard of the Church of England and most other Churches in the worldwide Anglican Communion. Cranmer’s cadences have given guidance and illumination to generations of Christians in regular worship and at the turning points of their lives and continue to do so. The direct and unambiguous words of the Prayer Book have become a familiar part of our speech.

Members of the Prayer Book Society, a registered charity, represent a wide diversity of background, tradition and churchmanship, united by a determination to uphold the worship and doctrine enshrined in the Book of Common Prayer of 1662. The Society was founded in 1972 when the Book of Common Prayer stood in danger of being swept away by the tide of liturgical reform. Happily the Prayer Book has survived in a number of lively Churches whilst in others it is marginalised to ‘off peak’ times. Young families and newcomers to the church have fewer opportunities now to encounter it. The PBS is working to redress this situation. PBS exists to advance the Christian religion through the use of the Prayer Book and to encourage its use through training of the Clergy, also in schools and colleges, and ensuring the Society’s views are effectively represented at synods, and finally, amongst the clergy and laity at large. PBS is currently celebrating 350 years of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer.

The Book of Common Prayer 350th Anniversary

All the work of the PBS needs continual membership and funds to provide services across the board. There is literature on the top shelf along the south wall including membership forms. Please make a donation if you can or write to The Prayer Book Society, The Studio, Copyhold Farm, Goring Heath, READING, RG8 7RT. Tel: 0118 984 2582. E-mail pbs.admin@pbs.org.uk. Music in Country Churches 25th and 26th May

Music in Country Churches

MICC, a charity which raises funds to assist churches with the cost of repairs and maintenance, is putting on three concerts in St Mary’s. Many of you will remember the splendid concerts of 2007; the musicians and programme for 2012 are of the same calibre so we are in for a real treat. The Patron is His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, who is very much a ‘hands on’ supporter of the charity and cares deeply about the country churches it assists.

Having already benefitted from the generosity of this charity we did not expect them to return; however, there are a huge number of churches in desperate need of aid but whose buildings are too small to host an event of this nature. This is where we, the larger churches, come in. We are hosting these concerts on behalf of St Mary’s, Driffield, a much smaller member of our Team and proceeds will go to them. South Cotswold Team Retreat 21st– 23rd September 2012

Our retreat is taking place at Nympsfield again this year, a delightful Cotswold village between Tetbury and Stroud. We have been returning here for several years, as the accommodation and facilities are so good, and it is very near to us. We leave Fairford 4:00-5:00pm on the Friday and return after lunch on Sunday. We all have our own rooms; and the cost of all this with excellent home cooking is £96 for the weekend.

The retreat leader this year will be Brian Atkinson who will lead us in study of a Bible passage.

This year it will not be a silent retreat, but there will be opportunities to be quiet and reflective if desired.

If you would like to join us, please let me know as soon as possible.
