Charity of the Month:
Action for Kids

Action for Kids

This is a national charity working with disabled children, young people, their parents and carers. Young lives are transformed not only by supplying wheelchairs and mobility equipment but by providing opportunities for work and training. Just one aspect of their work is the support given is a programme to help young people between the ages of 16 to 26 to acquire life skills and to take the first steps from living at home and towards living independently. Training sessions take place in a home where they learn everything from using a washing machine to dealing with utility bills. Those that complete the course successfully receive an OCN qualification.

Action for Kids relies entirely on voluntary funding so every penny donated goes to fund their activities. In a recent letter the charity says that they have been able to fund two Job Coaches to help find suitable work placements. Their mobility service continues to grow and in the past year the charity have provided and maintained 65 pieces of mobility equipment to children across the UK. These have ranged from sophisticated powered wheelchairs to allow disabled children the comfort and support to go to school or adapted trikes which give these children the freedom to play with their brothers and sisters like any child likes to do. The charity has also taken a group of youngsters to Kent. The purpose of the trip was to challenge and encourage them to develop skills needed for working and living independently. A range of outdoor activities were completed such as orienteering and climbing and learnt team building, problem solving and leadership skills, not to mention everyone having a thoroughly good time!

The charity would like to thank our Church for the support we have given in the past and with your donations that support can continue. Please put your donation in the box by the south door, and, if a taxpayer, complete a Gift Aid envelope as well. There is information on the top shelf of the bookcase along the south wall or you can write to : Action for Kids Charitable Trust FREEPOST (LON23001) LONDON N8 9BR Tel: 0845 3000 237.

Previous Charity Fundraising

Monies collected from the box for the April charity, Jerusalem and the Middle East Churches Association, JMECA, amounted to £31.86 to which the PCC will add further amounts.

Tiddles and the Nursing Nun

Tiddles

This small book tells the stories of Tiddles the church cat, whose stone memorial faces the south door, and Daphne Jones, who was born at Morgan Hall but chose to devote her life to the poor families in the East End of London.  It was Daphne's story and those of her nursing colleagues that inspired the successful Call the Midwife TV series.

The stories are completely factual and written as a children's book - which grown ups love, illustrated by photographs and the lovely sketches of Lorna Gray.  The book is hand bound in attractive fabric and hand stitched, with an attractive dust cover and, as a lot of people have said, can become a treasured heirloom.

Limited edition, price £7.99 available through St Mary's Church.  All profits are dedicated to the St Mary's Church Window Preservation Fund.
