Charity of the Month:
The Mission to Seafarers

The Mission to Seafarers

The Mission celebrate their work by encouraging churches across the UK to come together, on Sea Sunday 14th July, to remember the brave and dedicated seafarers who we rely on to keep our global economy afloat; and to celebrate, in their own way, the work of the seafarers. The Mission supports seafarers in over 260 ports in 71 countries around the the world through its global network of Chaplains and Volunteers who offer a warm Christian welcome, practical and financial support, advocacy services, access to legal advice and family liaison.

The work of a Seafarer is one of the most difficult, dangerous and challenging jobs in the world to-day. Away from family and friends for many months at a time, in multinational crews with others who may not speak the same language, seafaring can be a tough, lonely and hazardous career. Seafaring Centres offer a ‘home away from home’ providing a range of facilities including telephone and email services, which enable seafarers to contact loved ones; the opportunity to relax away from their ship; and the chance to seek counselling and spiritual support. Whatever the problem a seafarer is facing, be it piracy, shipwreck, injury, non payment of wages or abandonment in a foreign port, they know they can turn to the local Mission to Seafarers for help.

For those who are unable to come ashore due to port duties or short turnaround time, our ship visitors bring low cost phone cards and internet-linked laptops on board so that crews are not completely cut off from family and friends. Global recognition is essential for helping seafarers who are often far away from home for up to 18 months at a time. Working in testing conditions to deliver over 90% of the food and goods we use every day un the UK. They should not be forgotten in our prayers and in donations. They need our support.

There is literature on the shelf along the south wall and if more information is required write to The Mission to Seafarers, St Michael Pastermoster Royal, College Hill, LONDON, EC4R 2RL. Tel: 020 7248 5202.

Coronation Lunch Thank You!

Coronation Lunch 2 June

A great time was had by all who came to the Coronation Lunch in the Palmer Hall on Sunday 2 June. A huge thank you to all those who helped but especially Heather and Andy W who prepared loads of the lovely food, to Heather who make the pretty table decorations and to Pam and Dave Nelmes who took so much time and trouble in decorating the Hall which looked resplendent in red white and blue.

A massive thank you must also go to all those very generous people who donated plates of food for both the main course and pud without whom we would not have made nearly as much money. This was a very successful fund raiser for church funds realising a very healthy profit of £689.33 after all expenses.

The Pentecost Service

The Pentecost Service 2013

For our Pentecost service Brian asked members of the congregation to wear something red, the colour of Pentecost, and told them there would be prizes (entirely at the vicar's whim or fancy). Click here for the photographs.

The Food Bank

Cirencester Food Bank

Your support and enthusiasm is as heart-warming as always - and the latest acknowledgement from the Cirencester Food Bank is posted up in the church porch for everyone to see.

Ruth has taken over from Julia as the donations organiser, and when your gifts are delivered to The Beeches on a fortnightly basis (it used to be monthly, but the amount has increased), Ruth and another volunteer called Terry come out to the car and help to carry it all in, to be weighed and documented. Last week, Mandy Fry who is Chair of the C.F.B. was actually loading up her car with boxes full of goods ready to go to Ashcroft for distribution. The storage unit, which at the beginning seemed organised chaos, is now beautifully arranged in the best supermarket style.

A big "thank you" to Vanessa and Roz in the Council Office for allowing us to store goods in their 'dungeon', however, their space is limited, and we ran out of shelves, but we very much appreciate all they did.

Whether what you give is 'little or large' - it is SO needed by SO many, and we are being told daily in the media that the figures are growing. Your love and generosity speaks for itself. They are still requesting UHT milk - cartons of fruit juice and tinned vegetables please.
