Charity of the Month:
The Carers' Trust

The Carers' Trust

The April Charity is new to us - and some of you may have read a recent article in the colour supplement of the Daily Telegraph emphasizing particularly their work with Young Carers and their Families.  The Carers' Trust is a major new charity for, with and about carers.  They work to improve support, services and recognition for anyone living with the challenges of caring, unpaid, for a family member or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or addiction problems.  They do this with Network Partners - a unique network of independent carers centres, Crossroads Care schemes and young carers services. Together they are united by a shared vision for carers - to make sure that information, advice and practical support are available to all carers across the UK.

Caring is rarely something which can be planned for. Today, 7 million people are carers and by 2030 as more of us live longer it is likely to increases by 3.4 million.  Here in Fairford we have a lot of practical experience of carers and caring - families/friends supporting those who need help. The Carers Trust has now embarked on a further project to support young people who find themselves as carers - for example a 15 years old girl looking after a parent with an alcohol problem, other younger carers for a parent with a terminal illness or dementia. Carers all make enormous sacrifices, often putting aside their education, careers, social lives and even their health in order to care.

Together with local Network Partners, Carers Trust works across the UK to give carers access to desperately needed breaks, information and advice, and education, training and employment opportunities. Although the Trust is a new charity it has been supporting carers since 1974 when Crossroads Care was first established and works in partnership with other organizations for the benefit of carers - for example their project with the Royal College of General Practitioners is helping GP's to identify carers before they reach crisis support.

Full details of work of the Trust and the help provided is available in the leaflets which will be on the  helf in church during April and can also be obtained from: The Carers Trust, 32-36 Loman Street, London SE1OEH. Tel: 0844 800 4361 Email.
